Pulmonary Fellowship

Newly accredited Pulmonary Fellowship Program at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital located in beautiful southwest Virginia. Fellows receive the entire spectrum of pulmonary experiences and training to qualify them with subspecialty knowledge, skills and abilities. These training experiences are balanced between the areas of clinical service, academic research, and technical skills. The rotations on the pulmonary in-patient consult service give fellows proficiency in diagnosing and treating the vast array of lung pathology. Technical proficiencies are developed with specific procedures, such as diagnostic bronchoscopy, thoracentesis and chest tube placement. Additional opportunities are given to learn advanced interventional bronchoscopy procedures, such as laser therapy and airway stenting. The academic training includes the classic involvement in journal clubs, pathophysiology skill sessions, tumor boards and chest conferences. With the establishment of a new medical school (Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine) the required research by fellows is supported with exceptional academic faculty. Close affiliation with primary clinical researchers here in conjunction with PhD research faculty allow fellows choices for establishing their own research interests. Use of an already established "how to do" research program is required during the first year of fellowship. Procedures, patient care, and hands-on skill development prepare the graduating fellow to handle all aspects of the specialty of pulmonary medicine. Finally, outpatient clinics are assigned to educate fellows on how to diagnose and treat conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, and pulmonary fibrosis, in an academic ambulatory environment. In this environment, intellectual skills are refined with training on how to approach in a cost-efficient but timely way the various pulmonary problems patients may have.

Interested applicants who have already completed Internal Medicine Residency programs and are available in the next 90-120 days contact Sandra Wiles, Project Administrator, at smwiles@carilionclinic.org with a letter of interest, CV and photo. We are only able to accept JI-visa's at this time. Those interested in applying for July 2011 apply through ERAS.
